A Very Short Foray into Maryland
For the sake of time, we just cut through the very western corner of Maryland. There's a lot to see in that state, but it's all much further east. Interestingly enough, the trail to the highest point in Maryland actually begins in West Virginia. Accordingly, we drove through a piece of Maryland and into West Virginia, parked our car by the side of a windy country road and headed up the old logging road.
The majority of the trail was actually in West Virginia, including these mushrooms:
and this hill:
A note on the mushrooms: I, having grown up in moist areas, naturally assumed that mushrooms were ubiquitous. However, it only took a few pictures of mushrooms from Lani for me to realize that there obviously were no mushrooms in eastern Washington. It's funny the things we take for granted.
About 100m after crossing the border and 100m before reaching the highpoint we were greeted with this view:
The trail was well-marked with blazes on the trees and cairns, as seen in the above picture, so naturally the top was marked by a gigantic cairn with a note inviting all hikers to add their own piece to the highpoint. I was happy to do so:
With that, we returned to the car. This was actually a very pretty hike through the woods and one of the best up until that point.

Looks like fun! Yeah, I probably would have been taking pictures of the mushrooms too haha. And Lani, I'm so sorry I never called you back after Kate was born. That was so sweet of you to call and check on me, it was just a crazy time. But I want you to know I do appreciate it so much!
